"Betty Boop first appeared in the 1930 cartoon "Dizzy Dishes" as a singing dog modeled after singer/actress Helen Kane. Betty became Bimbo's girlfriend but in 1932's "Any Rags" she was redrawn as a human and in "Minnie the Moocher," Dave Fleischer designed her as a more sexy, feminine character and the Betty Boop we all know and love came into being. While she was sexy and suggestive, the studio wanted to keep her innocent and girlish, releasing her official age as sixteen. "Between 1930 and 1939, Betty appeared in scores of cartoons, becoming a household name and one of the only fiercely feminine characters in the era. She also had a short-lived comic strip in the 1940s and became a guest star on many Popeye cartoons in the 50's. Mae Questel, the voice of Betty Boop from 1931 was pulled into "Who Framed Roger Rabbit?" and was occupied with that when King Features and CBS were casting their new special "Betty Boop's Hollywood Mystery," and casting director Elaine Craig discovered the one and only Melissa Fahn who was then cast as the new voice of Betty Boop and Melissa has been providing the voice of Betty ever since." - Information from The Official Betty Boop Site, Betty Boop: An Obsession and Wikipedia: Betty Boop; Written by Jax Melissa on Betty: "[Elaine Craig] said I want you to come in for an audition for the new voice of Betty Boop which I thought was amazing because I had loved Betty Boop, I actually have a picture of when I was younger, I was wearing a Betty Boop tee shirt and I used to love doing Betty Boop, all my life I'd loved Betty Boop--she was a petite, dark-haired girl with a high voice, who loved to sing."
